Niederwald is one of the most pristine and distinctive villages in Goms. Since some of the houses in Niederwald are built closely together and rise in steps up the side of a steep slope, the village offers an impressive display of staggered gables. As if the village square had been forced out to the edge of this dense settlement, here some splendid houses and a range of outbuildings half-surround the square with the Cesar Ritz fountain.
When the Ritz Hotel is mentioned, who thinks first of a tiny village in Goms by the name of Niederwald? And yet Cesar Ritz, «the king of hoteliers and the hotelier of kings», whose name adorns luxury hotels all over the world, was born in Niederwald. Numerous restaurants in the area live today by the philosophy of Cesar Ritz. Creative chefs from Goms have developed new interpretations of their culinary heritage and now offer special Ritz menus.
The parish church of St. Theodul from 1666 is well worth a visit. The rich altars and the pulpit were created by Johann Sigristen around 1700, while the baptismal font, dating from 1671, is a showpiece from the Lagger atelier in Reckingen.
