The Matterhorn Gotthard Railway (MGBahn) operates throughout the Goms region, from Zermatt to Disentis and from Andermatt to Göschenen, covering a total distance of 144 kilometres. Trains climb to a height of around 3,300 metres, travel through 33 tunnels and galleries and across 126 bridges. The lowest point on the journey is Visp at 625 metres above sea level and the highest is the Oberalppass at 2,033 metres above sea level. 

Besides the roads, the MGBahn forms the main transport infrastructure in the Goms region. Trains run hourly in both directions, connecting all the Obergoms villages. 

Glacier Express
The Glacier Express is the world’s slowest express train. The journey from Zermatt to St. Moritz takes between 7½ and 8½ hours and is popular with young and old alike. The Glacier Express connects with mainline trains in Brig, Andermatt and Chur and can therefore be part of wonderful rail trips through Switzerland and the rest of Europe. 

Top tip > Adventure Card
The Adventure Card – issued by the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway (MGBahn) and the PostAuto Oberwallis bus company gives you free travel on MGBahn trains (excluding the Glacier Express) and PostAuto Oberwallis buses (total: 467 km). Cards are valid on 2, 3 or 5 days of your choice in any one month. Card holders also get a 50% reduction on other rail networks, ships, buses and cable cars, and on entrance to 80 museums and other attractions. Visit www.erlebniscard.ch to find out more about a choice of 50 trails. The walks are organised into four categories: adventure, culture, mountains and hiking trails. There is also a search function to help you choose the walk to suit your mood. Perhaps the Frauenzitatenweg at Unterbäch is what you're after, or maybe the birch wood nature trail in Bürchen is more to your taste. This same portal, which can also be accessed via your smartphone, provides interactive maps, elevation profiles, webcams and information about restaurants, etc.

Book online for the Glacier Express, Gornergrat Railway and the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway
The rail operator BVZ Holding AG has launched an online booking system for tourist adventures that also includes the online ticketing system for public transport. From the comfort of your own home you can book journeys on the Glacier Express, Gornergrat and Matterhorn Gotthard Railways and print out the tickets by clicking on print@home. Payment is by credit card.
