Why have people dwelt in the high valley of Goms for more than two thousand years? Because there has been transit traffic for ever. In earlier days, hunters took the route over the Goms passes to go south. Even whole communities such as Celts, Alemanni and Romans used the north-south passage. In later times, “Säumer” chose this thoroughfare to transport goods on their pack animals and sell them on the markets in Domodossola. Or they would take Mediterranean goods back over the Alps to supply the rest of Switzerland. Even later, the first guests arrived in carriages, by railway, postbus and eventually private transport.
THE RAILWAY OF THE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE GOMS
The Goms Matterhorn Gotthard Railway (MGBahn) as well as the steam railway “Furka Bergstrecke” are true gems of Swiss railway history. Since 1911, the MGBahn has connected the Goms villages to the rest of world. The world-famous Glacier Express has been running in this region since 1930. One of the world’s longest narrow gauge railway tunnels, the Furka tunnel, has made history. Thanks to railway fans of different parts of the globe, it was possible to maintain the precious steam railway “Furka Bergstrecke” riding via Gletsch and over the Furka Pass.
THE ALPINE PASSES, LIFE LINE OF THE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE GOMS
In earlier times, the passes served as north-south transit routes. Since 1850, the roads were developed for the use of autobuses, then cars. They were bold constructions at the time. Today, bikers, drivers and cyclists love the well-constructed streets over the Goms passes and the whole Gotthard area.
